The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation began as an annual blowout concert put on by members of the Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau, who made it their mission to triumphantly return to the stage the architects of blues, R&B, soul, rockabilly and garage rock. Over nine years of shows, the Stomp has seen musicians who thought they were forgotten re-launch dormant careers – and rediscover their own importance to legions of fans.

In 2008, the Stomp drafted the many music critics and scholars who had long been attending the concert to create the Ponderosa Stomp Music Conference – a series of live interviews and first-person discussions with the stars of the show, as well as DJs, record men, field recorders and others who shaped musical history. Through its vital collaborations with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the Louisiana State Museum, the Stomp Conference presents and records the stories of some of American music’s most treasured architects. Footage of conference interviews is archived at both institutions, capturing a significant repository of cultural history in keeping with the Foundation’s overall mission. Selected sessions from the 2010 conference will be live-streamed on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website (www.rockhall.com).

Moderators include journalists Ann Powers, Michael Hurtt, Chris Morris, John Morthland and Andy Schwartz as well as historians Rick Coleman, John Broven and Holly George-Warren. Musicians Deke Dickerson and Kid Congo Powers will weigh in, as will Dr. Lauren Onkey and Jason Hanley of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Ponderosa Stomp founder Ira Padnos takes a break from festival details to contribute as well.

An array of iconic musicians will be interviewed at the conference including Duane Eddy, Thee Midniters, Ronnie Spector, Ian Dunlop, The Trashmen, Sugarboy Crawford, Tommy Brown, Leroy Martin, Johnnie Allan, Johnny Gimble, Gloria Jones, Roy Head, Wendy Rene, Lala Brooks, Barbara Lynn, Lil Buck Sinegal and Dave Bartholomew.

The Stomp debuted its first annual film series, featuring classic footage, hot vintage performance and in-depth documentary at the 2009 conference. This year’s series is titled CLANDESTINE CELLULOID in honor of the programming – rarely-seen, occasionally controversial films documenting rock n’ roll in all its unruly, too-wild-for-the-screen glory; details will be announced shortly.

Not a typical “wine tasting” event, this 3-day festival is mostly about music and will feature three 6-hour evening concerts and two 2-hour afternoon concerts with over 2 dozen singer-songwriters.

We are excited about this year’s musical line-up and feel that it covers just about everyone’s musical tastes. In addition to our complement of word class singer songwriters, we’ve got some eclectic jazz with Snarky Puppy, Celtic rock with Dallas’ The Killdares, western swing with Austin’s Marshall Ford Swing Band, and Southern Rock/Soul/Crank music from Austin’s Uncle Lucius.

We are also thrilled about the return of some of our Kerrville favorites like Tom Kimmel (Nashville TN), Berkley Hart (San Diego CA), SONiA (Baltimore MD), and Kevin Welch (Wimberley TX).

There will also be 3:30–5:30 p.m. wine seminars on both Saturday and Sunday. The performers for the Friday evening concert include Tom Kimmel (Nashville TN), Acoustic Eidolon, Seth Glier (Massachusetts), Baskery (Stockholm Sweden), and Berkley Hart, Uncle Lucius (Austin TX), Matt King (Nashville TN), Corinne West & Kelly Joe Phelps (San Francisco CA), SONiA, The Killdares (Dallas TX). The Sunday night closing set will feature John Fullbright (Okemah OK), Kevin Welch (Wimberley TX), The Trishas (Austin TX), Marshall Ford Swing Band (Austin TX), and Snarky Puppy (Brooklyn NY/Denton TX). Each of the evening concerts start at 7 p.m. with the outdoor theater gates opening at 6 p.m.

The Saturday afternoon concert will feature finalists and/or winners from the 2010 Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk Competition for Emerging Songwriters in an In-The-Round format including Chet O’Keefe (Nashville TN), Kate Klim (Boston MA), Andrew Delaney (Dallas TX), Wyatt Easterling (Nashville TN), and Kim Richardson (Mountain Home AR). The Sunday afternoon concert will feature another group of emerging songwriters including Anthony daCosta, Raina Rose (Austin TX) and John Elliott (Los Angeles CA). Both afternoon concerts will start at 1 p.m. at the Threadgill Memorial Theater in the Quiet Valley Ranch campgrounds. (Pleasantville NY),

Yes, we’ll also have wine! The goal for the wine portion of the program is to send guests home with a greater understanding and appreciation for the wines of Texas. In recent years wines from Texas have compared favorably to those from France, California and the rest of the world. After 6 p.m. each evening, ten Texas wineries will have booths in the main stage theater where they will have tastes, glasses, and bottles of their current vintage available for sale.

There are also Wine Seminars held on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. The theme for each of the seminars will be “Start to Finish” where we will give participants samples of a four course meal starting with an appetizer, moving through to dessert, with each course paired with a Texas wine. The Saturday afternoon wine seminar will be “Italian”, and the Sunday theme will be “Southwestern.” Each of the seminars will begin at 3:30 p.m. on both Saturday, Sept 4 and Sunday, Sept 5 and will be held in the newly renovated Threadgill Theater in the Quiet Valley Ranch campgrounds. The advance price for each seminar is $8 per person in addition to your festival admission. Once the festival starts, any remaining seats will be available in the main stage theater for $10 each.

LOS ANGELES, CA – Frontier Records (http://www.frontierrecords.com/), the independent Los Angeles-based record label founded in 1980, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year with their 100th release, YES L.A., scheduled for later this year. Owned and operated by Lisa Fancher, Frontier is instrumental in releasing classic punk, alternative country, paisley underground, goth and pop records that are considered classic ‘must-haves’ to critics and serious music collectors alike.

Among the first to tap into the Los Angeles punk scene, Frontier Records’ initial success was releasing the classic Circle Jerks record Group Sex. This was later followed by Orange County’s Adolescents’ debut known as the Blue Album TSOL’s Dance with Me and Christian Death’s Only Theatre of Pain. However, it was the eponymous debut LP from Suicidal Tendencies that spawned the unexpected MTV smash “Institutionalized” that put Frontier on the map. If you caught the Don Johnson vehicle Miami Vice episode featuring Suicidal, you’d know the mainstream finally caught up with the underground.

In light of these early successes in punk rock, it is easy to overlook the fact that Frontier has also released well-known records from bands from a variety of genres: The Long Ryders, Thin White Rope, The Three O’Clock, Young Fresh Fellows, American Music Club and Heatmiser, Elliott Smith’s first band. All of these groups and more released full-length-albums on Frontier Records that were as important to the labels evolution as any punk rock angst the label is best known for.

Perhaps most importantly, a woman starting her own independent record label in an overwhelmingly male dominated music industry in 1980 was key in shattering the notion that ‘chicks can’t rock’. Simply put, women didn’t start their own record labels then, especially in the testosterone-drenched L.A. punk rock scene. For founder Lisa Fancher to have survived as an indie label for thirty solid years on, having seen her fair share of record distributors go belly up and put her label in financial jeopardy, makes its survival almost as impressive as its inception.

“When I founded Frontier Records in 1980, I had no idea what running a record label entailed, I just wanted to turn other people onto the local bands I loved,” said Frontier Records founder Lisa Fancher. “It’s pretty cool to have outlasted so many independent – and major – labels thirty years later but what really still makes me want to continue is to continue to release great music that still needs to be heard. Especially now!”

Having begun her music career as a teenage clerk at the Bomp Records store on Magnolia Blvd in North Hollywood— concurrently fan club president for L.A.’s The Dickies and publisher of Biff!Bang!Pow! fanzine— Lisa learned the ropes on how to jumpstart an indie label from the best possible mentors a person could have, Greg and Suzy Shaw at Bomp Records. While her first success came from releasing soon-to-be classic punk titles by new bands, Fancher gradually delved into the world of reissuing out-of-print catalog as well, including Born Innocent from Redd Kross, two legendary slabs of punk vinyl from The Weirdos: Weird World Vol. 1 & 2, Dangerhouse Vols 1 & 2 featuring crucial 45s by X, The Avengers, Weirdos, Black Randy, et al.), the Adolescents’ Complete Demos 1980 – 1996 and The Middle Class’ compilation Out of Vogue.

In late 2010, Frontier will re-release the digitally remastered Christian Death classic Only Theater of Pain with Rozz Williams’ original artwork as well as Dangerhouse’s Yes L.A. compilation and other nuggets soon to be announced. Additionally, Frontier has always been a vinyl-oriented label, which considers the limited edition colored vinyl LP their calling card – so expect more colored wax reissues in the coming months.

A 30th anniversary event honoring Frontier Records is in the works and will be announced shortly.

ABOUT FRONTIER RECORDS

Frontier Records was founded in Los Angeles, CA. 1980 by Lisa Fancher and is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. Frontier was one of the first independent labels to document the nascent L.A. and O.C. hard-core punk rock scene before branching out into other scenes and sounds such as the so-called “Paisley Underground” and (always) guitar-based bands along with genres such as goth, alternative country, pop and more. Bands releasing records on Frontier include: Circle Jerks, Adolescents, The Weirdos, TSOL, China White, Redd Kross, Thin White Rope, Heatmiser, Young Fresh Fellows, Christian Death, Dharma Bums, American Music Club, The Long Ryders, The Three O’Clock, The Pontiac Brothers, Naked Prey, Flop and many more. They are quickly closing in on their 100th release.

Produced by the City of Aspen with Oates aboard as executive producer, the event will feature world renowned headlining artists, alongside famous and emerging new songwriters from all musical styles to perform their favorite works for the city’s residents and visiting music lovers. Such collaborations are certain to yield some memorable performances and behind-the-scenes stories as well.

As half the legendary duo Hall & Oates and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Oates contributes both stature and insight to the Festival. “I’m inviting songwriters from all genres,” he says, “and asking them, ‘Who have you always wanted to play with but haven’t?’ Then we’ll see what happens. There has been a tremendous response to that question. I think it will result in some really spectacular collaborations and performances. We’re also at a significant inflection point in the world of songwriting where there are these exciting cross-currents taking place between generations. We want to encourage and nurture this aspect and provide a destination where this evolution can flourish.”

Working with Oates to make 7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL spectacular are the management and staff of Aspen’s 1889-vintage theater, the Wheeler Opera House. Last year, Oates and the Wheeler staged a three-part singer-songwriter series called “The Stories Behind The Songs.” “That was a great first collaboration,” says Wheeler Executive Director Gram Slaton, “and John had a lot of ideas afterwards that he wanted to explore for something bigger and better. So this festival concept seems like a logical expansion of that original songwriter series.”

A long-time resident of Aspen, Oates determined from the outset that the 2010 event wouldn’t be just another music festival. “The City of Aspen has a great tradition of bringing together the best and the brightest minds and souls in the world to be inspired, share their idea and create in one of the most beautiful places on earth,” Oates explains. “My thought was to expand that vision, to create a festival that would celebrate songwriting in its purest form—the writers, their words and their music. This is not about bands and big productions but rather an opportunity for the public to see and hear these amazingly talented songwriters in an intimate setting with high quality acoustics. It all starts with a song and we will celebrate that.”

Founded as a mining town in the late 1870s, Aspen has long been known for nourishing the arts. Starting with the Aspen Music Festival in 1949, the city has become a gathering place for musicians who have an abiding respect for nature and a sincere appreciation of each other’s talents. Musician-writers from John Denver to Burt Bacharach have staked out turf there, as have various members of The Eagles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Joe Cocker, and many others.

“What we want to do with the Festival,” says Slaton, “is grow yet another branch on the creative aspen tree, and I can’t imagine a better partner to work with in this than John. He is so committed to every kind of music, and encouraging new songwriting talent is a real passion for him. He has originated an ongoing student songwriting competition among kids in the Roaring Fork Valley and has been jamming with everyone who comes to town from The Neville Brothers, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas to Blues Traveler and Donovan Frankenreiter. His energy is truly infectious and a wonder of nature. I think we’re going to knock this Festival out of the park its very first year.”

For more information on 7908’ THE ASPEN SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL please call Wheeler Opera House Executive Director Gram Slaton at 970-920-5790 or email him at gram.slaton@ci.aspen.co.us.

Abingdon, Va. – Always…Patsy Cline, the hugely popular musical play about the legendary queen of country and her most devoted fan, returns to Barter Theatre’s Main Stage April 23–May 23.

Although Patsy’s life was cut short on March 5, 1963, her fans continue to increase in numbers as new generations hear and appreciate her music. Her signature songs like “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Crazy” and “I Fall to Pieces” are still heard on the radio, downloaded via iTunes and original videos of Cline singing are watched each day on YouTube.

Ten years after her death, Patsy Cline became the first woman inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and posthumously, millions of her albums continue to sell. Not only did Cline win the hearts of country music fans everywhere, but she also was the first woman to cross over the boundary of country music into pop with many of her top country songs appearing at the top of pop charts as well. Cline’s continued popularity has placed her in the same category as legends such as Elvis and Johnny Cash.

Always…Patsy Cline is based on a true story about a rare friendship between super star Patsy Cline and a fan, Louise Seger, who becomes a friend to the performer. The author, Ted Swindley, calls the piece extremely accurate in detail and gives a great deal of insight into Patsy’s marriage, family and her life on the road. The letter read at the end of the piece is the actual letter that Patsy Cline wrote to Louise Seger in 1961.

The two actors in the show, Jessica Welch (Patsy Cline) and Joy Hawkins (Louise Seger) are well practiced in playing their respective roles. Hawkins has been seen as Louise in the 1998 Barter production, as well as in theatres from Key West to Scotland. Welch has portrayed Patsy in over 3,500 performances throughout 48 states.

Interwoven with this true story are Cline’s songs, including the previously mentioned, as well as “Sweet Dreams,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “If You’ve Got Leavin’ on Your Mind.” The production features 22 Patsy Cline songs total.

The band backing up the singer in the Barter production is led by Musical Director Lee Harris (piano). The other talented and noteworthy musicians are Mark Baczynski (fiddle), Michael Libramento (drums), Roger Rettig (steel guitar), Ed Snodderly (guitar) and Brandon Story (bass).

“You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll sing along; but you will be ‘crazy’ if you miss this!” said Richard Rose, producing artistic director of Barter Theatre. Always…Patsy Cline plays for a limited time from April 23 through May 23. This show is sponsored by Strongwell; Highlands Community Services Center for Behavioral Health; ABC 19, WKPT-TV; Richlands News-Press; East Tennessee Medical News and WBRF 98.1 FM.

Barter Theatre is funded in part by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Always…Patsy Cline is part of the statewide initiative, MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts.

Banjo Camp North is a weekend-long celebration of the 5-string banjo in both old time and bluegrass styles! World-class banjoists make up our full-time and “adjunct” faculties. We have invited several top flight fiddlers and guitarists to teach about playing with other instruments and jamming, and to be on hand to help make those all-night jams something special. In response to previous attendees requests, this year we are adding a Fiddle Track for both Bluegrass and Old Time, plus we will emphasize banjo and fiddle duet playing.

Camp will open Friday at 12:00 PM for registration, jamming, and instruction. Registration will occur in the Adult Center starting at 12:30. We’ll have hands-on workshops, round robin demonstrations and guided jam sessions for three days, a Friday night “meet the faculty concert,” a formal concert Saturday night, and lots and lots of time for jamming and getting to know each other. Our resident instrument specialist will be there from 12 PM on Friday and all day Saturday. Lecture-demonstrations about banjo history and setup will be offered. Instrument vendors and makers, plus recordings, accessories and books will be on sale in our market area. Attendees are encouraged to bring banjos and other instruments for sale or trade.

The Beginners’ Track provides instruction for absolute beginners (those who haven’t played before), and those who can play a little bit, but still can’t play with other people or pick out tunes on their own. Click below for more information.

Advancing Beginners and Intermediates will find classes geared to their levels and needs. Advancing beginners may still only play a few phrases and chords, but they have some basic banjo experience. In general intermediates know some tunes but aren’t able to play up to speed yet. They are still working on rhythm. They may already read tab or notation, but can use help playing by ear and learning to arrange a tune or song on their own.

Classes at the Advancing Beginners/Intermediate level will include Learning To Play What You Hear, Playing Slow Tunes, Choosing Your Next Banjo, Introduction to Modern Bluegrass Style, Old Time Banjo, Translating Fiddle Tunes To The Banjo, What To Do When Another Instrument Has The Lead, Accompanying Singing, and many more. At Banjo Camp the emphasis is on using tab minimally – just to get you started playing.

For the Advanced Players, there will be added classes in Arranging Tunes or Songs For The Banjo, Introduction To What It Takes To Be An Effective Sideman, Playing For A Living, Playing And Composing For Commercials, and more.

The weekend will include at least 120 class hours plus guided jams at all speeds and levels. After each evening program there will be plenty of time for free jams, again at various levels. Most of the classes are hands on, practical learning situations. A few are demonstrations or mini-concerts, but even in these classes the intention is for you to take something away that you may want to learn or speak with the instructors about later. You are encouraged to bring a recording device of some kind.

Several other workshops that have been popular will be repeated. They include Maintaining and Optimizing Your Banjo, Playing With Others, Singing With The Banjo, Stagecraft, and Recording Techniques. There will be instruction at all levels.

Land Is Your Land² side-by-side at the pre-inaugural concert for our first
African American president‹folk music has been at the center of America¹s
history. International award-winning author Stephanie P. Ledgin delivers an
exciting new overview of folk music–its history, personalities and more–in
her latest book, Discovering Folk Music.

The first review to appear ‹TheDigitalFolkLife.org‹ has tagged the tome as
³brilliant,² while on the other side of the globe, at Borders.com-Australia,
Discovering Folk Music is noted as its #1 folk music title. An interview is
already in the can for future airing with XM¹s Mary Sue Twohy, host of The
Village and who also ³strongly recommended² Ledgin¹s third book, stating so
on its back cover.

From the Colonial era to sixties protest music to avant-garde 21st century
performers, Ledgin presents the genre as surprisingly diverse, every bit
epitomizing our national melting pot, embracing America¹s multi-cultural
traditions. Demonstrating the relevance of folk music in our everyday lives,
the book provides special emphasis on the folk revival era, when Bob Dylan,
Joan Baez, Odetta, and Peter, Paul and Mary sang out and influenced
subsequent generations. Interviews with such legends as Janis Ian, Tom
Paxton, Jean Ritchie, and Nora Guthrie, Woody¹s daughter, add color.

Endorsed by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame president Terry Stewart, Discovering
Folk Music is a groundbreaking look at 21st-century folk music in our
rapidly changing digital world, family-friendly while ripe for rediscovery
by the Woodstock generation.

Commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 2008, Ledgin was recognized in 2007 for
her career achievements when she received the Charlie Lamb Award for
Excellence in Country Music Journalism, bestowed by the International
Country Music Conference in cooperation with Belmont University in
Nashville. She was Director of the New Jersey Folk Festival at Rutgers from
1994-2003, is a founding member of Folk Alliance International and is a past
Board member of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Ledgin is
also the author of Homegrown Music: Discovering Bluegrass and From Every
Stage: Images of America¹s Roots Music, the latter of which generated a
three-year traveling photo exhibition that included stops at Lincoln Center
and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, among others.

Greater New York area music fans will recall Ledgin¹s pre-Internet
undertaking, The Traditional MusicLine, which was a comprehensive events
bible for all things acoustic throughout the Northeast for eighteen years.
Her voice was among the original hosts of WFUV 90.7 FM¹s CityFolk format
from 1989-1990. On the horizon is her own specialty broadcast endeavor to
bring Ledgin back on air digitally.
